SHORT ANSWER

For a Polish-registered passenger car: fire extinguisher + warning triangle.

Those are the two items you are legally required to have. A first-aid kit and reflective vest are recommended, but are not compulsory vehicle equipment for an ordinary passenger car.

Fire extinguisher

๐Ÿ”บ

Warning triangle

REQUIRED

Used to warn other drivers if the car is immobilised.

GOOD TO KNOW

What about a rental car?

If you rent a normal Polish-registered car, it should already contain the legally required equipment. It is still worth locating the triangle and extinguisher before you drive away โ€” especially because they may be hidden under the boot floor or in a side compartment.

๐Ÿฆบ
A vest is not compulsory car equipment โ€” but visibility rules still matter.

A person walking on a road outside a built-up area after dusk generally has to use reflective elements, unless using a pavement or a road intended only for pedestrians. Keeping a vest in the car is therefore a very good idea.

Bringing your own foreign-registered car?

Under the Vienna Convention approach used for international traffic, the vehicle's required equipment generally follows the rules of the country where the vehicle is registered. If you are driving across several countries, checking each country's practical roadside rules is still sensible.

Our practical packing list: triangle, extinguisher, reflective vest, first-aid kit, phone charger/power bank and a small torch. Only the first two are the basic compulsory equipment for a Polish passenger car, but all six are useful on a road trip.
