SHORT ANSWER

For a normal passenger car: remember 50 β€” 90 β€” 100 β€” 120 β€” 140.

The exact limit depends on whether you are in a built-up area, on an ordinary road, a single-carriageway expressway, a dual-carriageway expressway or a motorway.

50km/hBuilt-up area
90km/hOutside built-up areas
100km/hSingle-carriageway expressway
120km/hDual-carriageway expressway
140km/hMotorway
⚠️
Road signs always win.

A lower signed limit can apply because of road design, tunnels, traffic, weather, roadworks or safety conditions.

ONE EASY MISTAKE

β€œExpressway” does not always mean 120 km/h.

A dual-carriageway expressway has a maximum of 120 km/h for a normal passenger car. A single-carriageway expressway has a maximum of 100 km/h. Motorways allow up to 140 km/h unless signs say otherwise.

Useful motorway rule: on motorways and expressways, the minimum gap to the car in front should be at least half your speed in metres β€” for example about 60 m at 120 km/h and 70 m at 140 km/h, except while overtaking.
