Do I Need a Car in Poland?

For most first-time city itineraries, you can skip the rental car. But some parts of Poland are dramatically easier to explore with one.

SHORT ANSWER

No — most first-time visitors do not need a car for the whole trip.

If your itinerary is mainly Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Poznań and other major cities, trains plus local public transport are usually easier. A car becomes much more useful for countryside, small towns and nature-heavy trips.

🚆

Skip the car

Major-city itinerary, city breaks, travelling between central railway stations, staying in historic centres.

🚙

Rent a car

Mazury, Podlasie, remote countryside, small villages, dispersed attractions or a route with many rural stops.

Best compromise: use trains between major cities and rent a car only for the 2–4 days when you actually need one.

WHEN A CAR HELPS

Poland is easy by rail — until your itinerary stops following the rail network.

🏙️

Big cities

A car can become a burden because you still need parking and will often use trams, buses or walk once you arrive.

🚆

City to city

Long-distance trains connect the main tourist cities, often from centre to centre.

🌲

Nature & countryside

A car gives you much more flexibility when attractions are spread out and local transport is infrequent.

Families

For luggage, child seats and several rural stops, a car may be worth the extra logistics.

Before renting

Know the Polish motorway toll system and the basic speed limits. Not every motorway is paid, and the rules are different for ordinary passenger cars and vehicles above 3.5 tonnes.

FAQ

Driving or public transport?

Do I need a car for Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk?

No. For a typical first-time itinerary through major cities, trains and city public transport are usually enough.

When is a car useful in Poland?

It is most useful for rural areas, lake districts, small towns, remote attractions and multi-stop countryside trips.

Should I rent a car for my entire holiday?

Often not. A good compromise is to travel between major cities by train and rent a car only for the rural part of the trip.
