No recreational legalization
There are no legal recreational cannabis shops or coffeeshops operating under a Polish recreational-use system.
The tourist-safe answer is simple: Poland has not legalized recreational marijuana, and there is no legal “a few grams is fine” rule.
SHORT ANSWER
Unlawful possession of controlled drugs can be a criminal offence. Do not treat a small amount for personal use as legal. Poland does not have a recreational cannabis market or a statutory personal-use allowance that makes possession automatically lawful.
Article 62a says proceedings may be discontinued in certain cases involving an insignificant amount intended for the person's own use, when punishment would be pointless in light of the circumstances and social harm. That is a possibility for the authorities — not permission to possess cannabis, and not a guaranteed number of grams.
WHAT THE LAW MEANS FOR A VISITOR
There are no legal recreational cannabis shops or coffeeshops operating under a Polish recreational-use system.
Article 62 of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction penalizes unlawful possession of narcotic or psychotropic substances.
Unauthorised cultivation of cannabis other than fibre hemp is also prohibited under the Act.
Controlled medicines have special cross-border documentation rules. A prescription from another country should not be treated as automatic permission to carry cannabis into Poland.
MEDICAL CANNABIS
Polish law allows cannabis material to be used as a pharmaceutical raw material for prescription medicines. That does not make recreational possession legal.
Since 7 November 2024, covered medical-cannabis preparations generally cannot be prescribed solely by remote consultation: an in-person medical examination is required, with a limited exception for continuation of treatment by a primary-care doctor under the rules described by the Patient Rights Ombudsman.
Cross-border transport of narcotic and psychotropic medicines is subject to special documentation procedures. Do not rely only on the fact that the medicine is prescribed in your home country. Check the current Polish Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate (GIF) procedure before travelling.
FAQ
No. Article 62a can allow a case to be discontinued in some circumstances, but it does not legalize possession and does not create a guaranteed “safe” quantity.
No. Poland does not have a legal recreational cannabis retail system.
It can be prescribed and dispensed under Poland's regulated medical system. That is separate from recreational cannabis law.
Do not assume a foreign prescription alone is enough. Controlled medicines are subject to specific cross-border documentation rules; check the current GIF procedure before travel.
