Do You Tip in Poland?

You do not have to. Tipping is optional. For ordinary good service, around 5% is a perfectly reasonable thank-you; 10% is generous.

Guidance checked 14 August 2026

SHORT ANSWER

Poland does not have an American-style tipping obligation.

Paying the amount on the bill is acceptable. If the service was good and you want to leave something extra, a small tip is appreciated.

0%
Absolutely acceptable

No tip is compulsory.

10%
Generous

Common in tourist-oriented or more formal restaurants.

Different travel guides quote different percentages, often 5–15%. The important point is that tipping remains discretionary rather than mandatory.

RESTAURANTS

What should I actually do?

Normal sit-down restaurant

Round up or leave around 5% if the service was good. You are not rude if you simply pay the bill.

Excellent / formal service

10% is a generous and easy rule of thumb.

Bar mleczny / self-service

No tip is normally expected.

🧾
Check for “serwis” on the bill.

Some restaurants, especially for larger groups, add a service charge automatically. If it is already included, you do not need to add another tip unless you really want to.

Current travel guidance is not perfectly uniform: some sources quote about 10% as common in restaurants, while others give broader ranges beginning around 5%. That is why Poland Essentials treats 5% as a perfectly reasonable voluntary tip, not as a minimum.

PAYING

Cash or card?

If you want to tip while paying by card, ask the server whether the tip can be added before the card payment is processed. Some restaurants support card tips; others do not. Cash is simple if you already have small złoty notes or coins.

Proszę doliczyć napiwek.

PRO-sheh do-LEECH-ych na-PYEV-ek

Please add a tip.

Taxi

No tip required. Rounding up a fare by a few złoty is a normal, easy gesture if you want to tip.

Café / bar

No fixed percentage. Small change or rounding up is enough; counter service does not create a tipping obligation.

🧳

Hotel

Tips are optional. In higher-end hotels, a small amount for luggage help or exceptional service is appreciated.

🚶

Tour guide

For a good paid tour, tipping is optional. For “free” walking tours, the guide often relies much more heavily on voluntary payments.
