🗣 ENGLISH IN POLAND

Do Polish People Speak English?

For a city break in Poland, English will usually take you a long way. Just do not confuse “easy to travel in English” with “everyone speaks English.”

SHORT ANSWER

Yes — many Polish people speak English, especially in cities and tourist-facing places.

You can usually handle hotels, airports, many restaurants, attractions and everyday tourist situations in English. But not everyone speaks it, and communication can be less predictable in small towns, local offices or when speaking with older people.

Useful context, not a guarantee: the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index ranks Poland 15th globally with a score of 600. EF's index is based on adult test-taker data, so it is a broad indicator rather than the probability that any individual person you meet will speak English.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Where English is easiest

🏨

Hotels & hostels

English is very common in accommodation aimed at international visitors.

✈️

Airports & major attractions

These are designed for international travellers and usually have English signage or staff support.

🍽️

City-centre restaurants

English menus and English-speaking staff are common, though not universal.

🏘️

Small towns & local services

English can be more hit-and-miss. A translation app and a few Polish phrases are useful backup.

Jakdojade can handle city transport planning and ticketing, while rail apps/websites cover train searches and tickets. Saving your hotel address and destination names on your phone also helps.

ONE PHRASE TO LEARN

Ask first — it feels much better

🙂

To a man: Czy mówi Pan po angielsku?

To a woman: Czy mówi Pani po angielsku?

Meaning: Do you speak English?

Can you visit Poland with zero Polish? Yes. For a normal tourist trip, you do not need to learn Polish first. But “dzień dobry” (hello/good day), “dziękuję” (thank you) and “proszę” (please/you're welcome) are worth the tiny effort.

FAQ

English in Poland

Can I travel around Poland without speaking Polish?

Yes. A typical trip through cities such as Warsaw, Kraków, Gdańsk or Wrocław is manageable in English, especially if you use transport and translation apps.

Do older Polish people speak English?

Some do, but English is less predictable with older generations. Russian or German may have been more common school languages for some people, so do not assume English will work every time.

Should I learn Polish before visiting?

You do not need to, but a few polite phrases are useful and appreciated.
