Can You Pay by Card in Poland?
Yes — very widely. In cities, you can normally pay by card or phone in restaurants, shops, hotels, supermarkets and many taxis.
SHORT ANSWER
You can travel around Polish cities almost entirely cashless.
Contactless payment is standard. Visa and Mastercard are the safest cards to bring; phone wallets generally work anywhere the underlying card is accepted contactlessly.
according to the National Bank of Poland's assessment for the end of 2025.
DO I NEED CASH?
A little cash is still useful.
You do not need to arrive with a wallet full of banknotes. For a typical city break, card can be your main payment method. Keep a small amount of PLN for exceptions.
Some still use coins or cash, although card payment is becoming more common.
A small stall or temporary vendor may occasionally be cash-only.
Cash can be convenient if you want to leave a small tip.
IMPORTANT AT THE TERMINAL
Choose PLN or your home currency?
Usually choose Polish złoty
Your card issuer then handles the currency conversion according to the terms of your card.
Check before accepting
Paying in your home currency is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). The terminal or ATM's offer includes its displayed exchange rate and may include additional fees or markup.
TRAVEL MONEY TIP
Terminal asks: PLN or EUR / GBP / USD? Usually choose PLN.
If you choose PLN, your own card network/bank handles the conversion. If you choose your home currency, the terminal uses Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and its own displayed exchange rate, which can include a markup or extra fee.
Example: the screen says 250 PLN or €61.80. Unless you have checked that the €61.80 conversion is genuinely better, choose 250 PLN.
Visa specifically advises travellers that paying in the local currency is typically more cost-effective when a merchant offers Dynamic Currency Conversion. Your own bank can still charge foreign-exchange fees, so check your card's terms as well.
ATMs
The same PLN rule applies at cash machines.
If an ATM offers to convert the withdrawal into your home currency, read the rate and fees carefully. You can normally decline the ATM's conversion and withdraw in PLN, leaving conversion to your bank/card provider.
WATCH THE SCREEN
An ATM may make the conversion option look attractive or “guaranteed”.
That does not automatically mean it is cheaper. Also check whether the ATM charges its own separate withdrawal fee and whether your bank charges for foreign cash withdrawals.
APPLE PAY / GOOGLE PAY
Can I just use my phone?
Usually yes. Because contactless terminals are ubiquitous in Poland, Apple Pay and Google Pay are practical for travellers when your underlying Visa or Mastercard is supported by your wallet and issuer.
Keep one with you as a backup.
Very convenient for normal contactless purchases.
Useful for occasional exceptions.
A VERY POLISH PAYMENT METHOD
What is BLIK?
If you spend any time in Poland, you will see the word BLIK everywhere: at online checkouts, on payment terminals and on ATMs. It is a Polish mobile-payment system built into participating banking apps.
How the classic BLIK payment works
- Open your bank's mobile app.
- Generate a temporary 6-digit BLIK code.
- Enter the code at checkout or an ATM.
- Confirm the transaction in your banking app.
BLIK can be used for purchases without entering card details.
Polish users can withdraw — and in supported machines deposit — cash with BLIK without inserting a payment card.
One of its most popular features is instant money transfer to another user's phone number.
BLIK is one reason you may see a Polish customer apparently “pay with a six-digit number” instead of taking out a card.
